Professional Education and Training Framework (PETF)

One of the key strengths of ATEM is our commitment to focused training programs for members and other managers and administrators who work in the tertiary sector. Using ATEM's extensive contacts, as well as partnerships with institutions and professional development providers, members have access to a wide range of relevant management development courses and programs. These comprise:

ATEM's Professional Education and Training Framework (PETF) is particularly appreciated by members as it allows them to develop an individual career development plan which suits their needs and those of their institutions.

Conferences

Annual Conference

The Association runs its annual conference - the Tertiary Education Management Conference (TEMC) - in partnership with the Tertiary Education Facility Managers Association (TEFMA). TEMC is a flagship activity that exposes members to national and international trends in tertiary education management. The annual conference provides an opportunity for members to share outcomes of their initiatives, assist in the development of best practice across the sector and discuss work initiatives with their peers.

Regional Conferences

Most Regions also run Regional Conferences to address local issues and needs. Papers presented as part of concurrent sessions at conferences are published on the ATEM website and archived by the National Library of Australia. These papers may also be circulated to other groups in tertiary education.

Publishing Papers

The opportunity to present and publish papers is part of ATEM's commitment to professional development, to increasing the rigour and standing of the profession of tertiary management, and to increase awareness across the sector of relevant and successful developments.

Grants and Scholarships

In order to assist ATEM members with their professional development goals a number of grants and scholarships are available. These include:

The Peter Karmel International Travel Grant for undertaking specific projects designed to advance professional practice and develop the knowledge base of the profession
Maurie Blank Study Scholarships
 to assist with formal qualifications

Through its professional affiliations, ATEM also offers free places for members on courses from time to time, awarded through appropriate selection processes. Members are notified as opportunities arise.

Networking

One of the great benefits of belonging to a professional association dedicated to tertiary management and administration, is the opportunity to meet with colleagues working in similar environments with similar challenges. Opportunities for networking are extensive, including:

Advocacy

ATEM makes submissions relating to the expertise of members in tertiary education management to government and other bodies, and these submissions are published on the website.

One of the roles of ATEM is to provide a voice for its members. As a professional association representing administrative and management staff, it can provide a unique insight into current tertiary education issues. Its views are respected by those in senior roles in both the tertiary and government sectors.

Recognition of Excellence

ATEM is committed to recognising excellence in the field of tertiary education management and makes a number of awards to members and non-members annually. These include:

Resources and Discussion Forums

Providing members with key resources is core to ATEM's activities. In order to assist members to stay in touch with developments in academic disciplines related to tertiary management, and to share the outcomes of members' work in the sector, a number of forums have been developed. Foremost among these are:

  • the quarterly Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management, established in 1977, and now jointly published with the LH Martin Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Management

The Association's website is a key resource and communication tool. Not only does it publish information and details on services, the Association uses the website for on-line voting for its elections.

Linkages and Alliances

In order to assist members develop a global view of issues facing tertiary education, ATEM has a number of international links with similar professional associations, and has reciprocal arrangements for conference attendance.

ATEM, as a professional association, works with relevant groups in tertiary education to promote the standing of the profession and to develop, where appropriate, cooperative programs and arrangements.

ATEM also develops strategic partnerships with education institutions and organisations to provide members with access to the widest range of quality programmes and services.

ATEM has 1,300 members working between Australia and New Zealand, plus 17 members overseas in Asia, Europe and North America.
