| Professional Education and Training Framework |
The concept and practice of 'Life long learning' is an important element in enabling us to take our place in the global knowledge economy. Therefore a Professional Education and Training Framework (PETF) should be designed to enable the overarching goal of 'people learning to manage tertiary education' to be achieved. Consequently the ATEM Executive has determined that in order to complete the final step towards being a 'profession' there is a requirement for continuing Professional Development (CPD).
The primary purpose of the PETF is to ensure that we, as tertiary education managers and administrators maintain professional currency, increase our standing within our profession and ensure that the profession is supported in our activities via the development, dissemination and advancement of professional knowledge.
Members of ATEM are entitled to a fair and equitable professional standard that underpins the status of the profession and supports strong career opportunities for its members. These professional standards enable existing ATEM members to move to higher membership levels by fulfilling the required criteria, thereby demonstrating recognised leadership within the profession.
In accordance with current theory and practice adopted by most professions, ATEM has developed a professional standards model and membership grades, to support its membership categories. Within this model each grade of membership is defined by criteria based on professional attributes expected of a practitioner at that level. The entry level of professional membership is that of full member.
Members can be part of ATEM either through an individual membership, through being a nominated but individual member through their institutions paying the corporate fee for 5 senior members, or through maintaining an individual membership as an emeritus member on retirement.
Corporate members are recognised within ATEM as playing a leading part in the education and training of tertiary managers. This membership provides five individual memberships at the appropriate grade for the CEO and four of the next senior members of the institution, for the payment of a single special corporate fee. It also allows institutional access to ATEM services such as free advertising of job vacancies on the ATEM website.
The Emeritus Members are retired members of ATEM who have made a commitment to assist ATEM and its regions in day to day support, and they support the aims of the ATEM Foundation.
Student Membership is available to any current full-time student. This category of membership provides students with access to a broad range of issues and information, whilst ensuring that students keep abreast of industry developments and trends.
Student membership is available to current full-time students. Evidence of full-time study will be required for each year of student membership.
Student Members receive the full range of member benefits, but are not eligible for grants, scholarships or voting rights. They pay half the full membership fee.
Available to any person working in, or with an interest in tertiary education management. Members receive the full range of member benefits including eligibility for grants, scholarships and voting rights. A member is entitled to use the post nominal ATEMM.
Associate Fellow membership is available to those who possess a degree and/or equivalent professional career knowledge, skills and experience in tertiary education management.
Applicants must provide evidence of a minimum of three years experience within the field of tertiary education management. The applicant is also required to have held a position of management or leadership for a minimum of two years.
Associate Fellows receive the full range of member benefits.
Associate Fellows are required to complete a minimum of thirty (30) hours of continuing professional development (CPD) per annum. Associate fellows are entitled to use the post nominal ATEMAF.
The award of ATEM Fellow recognizes the efforts of members to pursue their professional development and to improve administrative practice within the profession. The award of Fellow to an ATEM member represents the culmination of a sustained period of commitment to the profession and reflects the superior level of achievement in both professional practice and professional development of the member.
To be considered for a Fellowship of ATEM, a person must have been actively engaged in the practice of the profession of tertiary education administration and management for at least 8 years and in a senior management role demonstrating strategic management and leadership for a minimum of two years. Leadership and service to the tertiary education community over at least five years must also be demonstrated.
In this context a leadership role could include organizing professional development activities, participating on a committee at region or Association level, presenting papers or chairing sessions at region and Association conferences or during this time, the member must have undertaken a significant period of academic and/or professional education in a field of study that is directly related to the practice of the profession of tertiary education administration or management.
Academic and professional education will be interpreted broadly but the member must be able to demonstrate clearly that their professional development activities during their time as a tertiary education administrator or manager has been focused and has been directed towards improving both their professional practice and their professional standing. Fellows are required to complete thirty (30) hours CPD per annum. Fellows are entitled to use the post nominal ATEMF.
This is an existing membership category awarded by Council. To be considered by Council for an Honorary Fellowship of ATEM, a person must have been active in tertiary education administration and management for a period of not less than 10 years. During this period, the person must have demonstrated significant commitment to the aims and objectives supported by ATEM and its predecessor, AITEA and have been actively involved in advancing the profession of tertiary education administration and management, including the active support of other administrators and managers to improve their professional development.
The contribution made by the person to the development of the profession must be judged by the selection committee as having been significant to the development of the profession of tertiary education administration and management over an extended period of time.
The award of Honorary Fellow may be made to an ATEM member or non-member and may be awarded to a person who meets the criteria but who is no longer working within the tertiary education.
Honorary fellows are entitled to use the post nominal HonATEMF.
