The Square Kilometer Array Project: Getting There

This breakfast seminar will provide an overview of the scientific and management aspects of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project, the largest ground-based international astronomical facility of the 21st century. Australia and South Africa are competing for this project and if Australia is successful, the SKA will be hosted in the mid west of Western Australia and will drive scientific and technological innovation and educational interests for the next 50 years. The SKA is a major global inter-institutional initiative, involving collaboration between academic and scientific institutions. As well as broadly outlining the project and its current status, this presentation will highlight some of the infrastructural and management challenges associated with the project. The SKA will consist of more than 3000 radio dishes, spread across 5000 km from Western Australia to New Zealand.
